National Women’s Council welcomes recommendation to set up women’s museum

The National Women’s Council (NWC) today (12th December 2025) welcomed the wide-ranging recommendations by the Government’s Advisory Committee on Women’s Stories including the recommendation to establish a dedicated and permanent women’s museum. NWC called on the Government to implement the recommendation to ensure the vital role of women’s stories and experiences in shaping Irish history and society is represented and recognised.

The Advisory Committee on Women’s Stories was established in March 2024 to advise the Government on ways to advance and enhance the representation of women’s stories, experiences and voices, in all their diversity within the National Cultural Institutions and the national collections, and to consider a range of options for the creation of a dedicated presentation of women’s stories, including a women’s museum. NWC participated in the process as a member of the Advisory Committee.

In its report published today, the Advisory Committee outlines 8 themes, encompassing 31 specific recommendations in total.

NWC welcomed that the report is based on a very comprehensive consultation process with women, including women from marginalised backgrounds, including Traveller, migrant, disabled and LGBTQ+ women.

Doireann Crosson, Head of Policy, National Women’s Council (NWC) said,

“For far too long women’s stories have been written out of our history. Our diverse stories and experiences deserve to be told and are a vital and rich part of our history, culture and society, that has often been overlooked and marginalised.

The recommendations of this report will be vital to address this gap. NWC looks forward to working with the Department of Culture, Communication and Sport, to implement them.”

She continued,

“NWC particularly welcomes the strong recommendations to provide appropriate and tailored supports to enable underrepresented and marginalised communities to collect, preserve and share their stories. This includes the use of universal design and accessible formats.

The creation of a women’s museum would be a significant recognition of women’s contribution to Irish history.  It would send a powerful message about the role women have played in shaping Irish history, society and culture.”
